Looking at this fascinating chart, we can see a remarkable shift. Back in 1963, British individuals, insurance companies and pension funds owned the vast majority of shares listed on the London Stock Exchange. The "rest of the world" owned just a small slice.
What's particularly striking is how this has completely flipped. By 2022, foreign investors dominated the market, owning most of British companies' shares. Meanwhile, British pension funds, which once owned a significant chunk of UK Plc, now hold just a tiny fraction of the market.
