Where is inflation hitting the hardest
Five charts to start your day
Good morning – here are your five chart for the day.
CHART 1 • US inflation by category
Eggs have cracked the inflation code, surging 27.3% year-on-year to lead all consumer categories. The US Department of Agriculture expects egg prices to increase 41 percent in 2025. Avian flu has devastated flocks, with 153.87 million birds affected since February 2022, including 127 million egg layers. Coffee follows at 13.4%, while tech products deflate dramatically.
By contrast, Smartphones are down 14.1%, televisions off 10.1%, and even petrol down 8.3%. This split economy reveals winners and losers: protein producers profit while electronics importers slash prices. For portfolios, it signals where pricing power lives. Essential food items command premium prices even as discretionary goods deflate.
