The Kessler Syndrome has been postulated to occur when a collision in space sets off an uncontrolled chain reaction of cascading crashes between the 50,000 odd satellites and pieces of junk now orbiting the planet. It could result in Earth’s orbitals being unsafe for any space missions for centuries as the debris field thickens into an impenetrable cloud. It could immediately end non-terrestrial communications and scientific expansion into space. It would make scientific proofs of climate change so much more difficult to collect.
