Will an energy independent United States end global conflict?
Imagine a world where peace blankets the globe. The US is finally energy-independent, ushering in a new dawn of energy sustainability. Humanity thrives. The US no longer needs to secure vital resources by projecting its military power because it has all the energy it needs. The same is true for China, Europe, and the rest of the world. Of course, naturally as human beings, we will probably find something else to fight about or fight over.
But, let's go back to the US, because there is some merit in this story. Perhaps this is wishful thinking and an overly optimistic perspective of energy independence, however, there is some logic behind this.
This has actually been a decade-long policy pursued by countless US administrations. Firstly, the US has wanted to re-risk and decouple its energy supply from OPEC’s influence ever since the 1970s energy crisis. This is partly why shale gas and oil innovation has been pushed so hard.
Secondly, they need cleaner gas for energy generation to support the transition to renewable energy. Highly efficient combined-cycle gas turbines have dramatically lowered the “levelized cost of energy”.
As you can see from this beautifully illustrated chart from the New York Times, everything in the US is booming: oil, gas, and renewable energy. The US is rapidly moving towards energy independence and might probably already be there now.
