Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a "developed India" by 2047 has ignited both hope and skepticism. As the world's attention increasingly turns towards this South Asian giant, a crucial question looms: Can India truly ascend to superpower status in the coming decades?

India stands at a crossroads of potential and peril, poised for global prominence yet facing formidable challenges both internal and external. With a population set to dwarf that of China, India's sheer size could propel it to match US economic output in the not-so-distant future. However, this ascent is far from assured.

Global economic headwinds, climate change and geopolitical tensions threaten to derail progress. Simultaneously, domestic hurdles – from education to infrastructure – demand urgent attention. India's success hinges on its ability to harness its strengths: strategic importance to the West (especially the US), an influential diaspora and vast human capital.

To realise its potential, India must seize the opportunity to shape global trade and diplomacy. This requires transcending internal divisions to fulfill its role as a stabilising force on the world stage. The path to superpower status is clear, yet fraught with obstacles that demand visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to reform.

The question remains: Can India deliver on this promise? According to this chart from the Financial Times it is possible. It could match Greece on a purchasing power parity basis by 2047. However, this would still require huge change and immense progress from India.
