Five charts to start your day
Air travel is back and is soaring to new heights
Summer is coming and US airports are bracing for an unprecedented surge in passenger traffic. According to TSA data, the average daily passenger volume for 2024 has already reached 2.36 million, a staggering 47 per cent increase from 2021 and on par with the full-year average for 2023.
Airlines for America predicts that a record-breaking 271 million passengers will take to the skies between 1 June and 31 August, surpassing the previous summer by more than 6 per cent.
However, this soaring demand comes at a time when the industry faces significant challenges. The FAA reports a shortage of approximately 3,000 air traffic controllers nationwide, raising concerns about the system's ability to handle the increased volume. Furthermore, climate change looms large, with forecasts of the most aggressive Atlantic hurricane season on record threatening to disrupt air travel with extreme weather events.
