The launch of the iPhone was an iconic event. I never bought the first generation, but I remember the hype and the long queues outside the Apple store. It was a turning point for the company and a pivot that would utterly transform Apple and its business structure.

This data visualisation from Visual Capitalist begins at the start of the iconic period and takes us through to the present day. Apple is now a $3 trillion company, and the bulk of its revenue now comes from the iPhone.

Along the way, however, Apple has made new forays and further pivots. The most noticeable are the services the company offers, which as of 2023 now account for 22% of all revenue. It also continues to enjoy a decent revenue stream from both iPads and iMacs, with a growing accessories business. As a business, Apple continues to evolve and grow.

iPhone sales might be starting to dip, but Apple still has plenty of options for the future.
