ChatGPT still leads the AI platform usage race
Five charts to start your day
For $10 a month, or $100 a year, you support a simple mission: spread great data visualisation wherever it comes from. You help fund the work of finding, sourcing and explaining the charts that deserve a wider audience. And you back a publication built on generosity, transparency and the belief that better understanding makes a better world.
CHART 1 • ChatGPT still leads the AI platform usage race
The AI race is easier to understand if you stop listening to launch announcements and watch what people actually use. On that measure, ChatGPT still has the clearest lead.
That lead is not just fame. Habit is distribution. Google can push Gemini through Android and Search, Microsoft can attach Copilot to work software, and Chinese platforms can scale inside domestic ecosystems. OpenAI’s advantage is real, but it is not protected by model quality alone.
The numbers are estimates, and web visits are not the same as paying customers. Even so, usage is the uncomfortable scoreboard. The winning AI product will not be the one with the best demo. It will be the one people build into their day.

A technology stops being a spectacle when it creates dependencies. People build habits around it, companies build budgets around it, cities build infrastructure for it and young workers start to shape their careers around what it might do.
The rest of the issue follows that change of state. AI is no longer just a product category. It is becoming a claim on capital, electricity, office work and the first jobs people hoped would protect them from disruption.
