BYD is set to overtake Tesla sales
Five charts to start your day
Good morning – here are your five chart for the day.
CHART 1 • BYD set to overtake Tesla in EV sales
Chinese automaker BYD is about to dethrone Tesla as the world's electric vehicle king. The forecast shows BYD rocketing past 2.4 million units this year while Tesla stalls below 1.7 million – a stunning reversal for Elon Musk's empire.
This is more than a market share gain for BYD. This represents both geopolitics and a consumer backlash against Tesla. BYD's quarterly pure electric vehicle sales have already surpassed Tesla's for two consecutive quarters. The Chinese giant reported 416,388 BEV deliveries in Q1 2025, up nearly 39% year-over-year, while Tesla's sales plunged 13% to just 336,681 units. Musk's political positioning has triggered consumer boycotts in key markets, with early 2025 data showing softening sales across the US and Europe. Meanwhile, BYD is unleashing game-changing technology: a 1,000-kW ultra-fast charging system that delivers 400 km of range in just 5 minutes, leaving Tesla's Superchargers in the dust. As one analyst put it, "CEO Elon Musk has scored somewhat of an own goal against Tesla." The crown is changing heads.
