CHART 1 • Anthropic overtook OpenAI in five months
OpenAI doubled its reported sales pace in five months and still ended up behind Anthropic. By July, Anthropic was reporting $65bn against OpenAI’s $40bn. I think the reversal is more interesting than the size of either number because it suggests that the best-known consumer brand is not automatically winning the business market.
Anthropic says much of its acceleration is coming from companies and software developers, particularly Claude Code. If you are choosing an AI supplier, that matters: the company capturing business workflows can become difficult to replace, even if another chatbot remains more famous.

I would still be careful with the apparent lead. These are annualised figures supplied by two private companies, not audited revenue calculated under one standard. They demonstrate extraordinary momentum, but not superior technology or profit. Investors discussing a possible Anthropic flotation are being asked to price that momentum before the underlying accounts are fully comparable.
