The peace dividend is over. After decades in which military budgets looked like yesterday’s problem, governments are again treating defence as a core economic priority. The IMF says conflicts have risen sharply over the past 15 years, while about half of countries increased military budgets between 2020 and 2024.

The striking detail is not just higher spending, but the speed of the reversal. By 2024, nearly 40% of countries were spending more than 2% of GDP on defence, up from 27% in 2018. SIPRI also found that global military expenditure hit $2.43 trillion in 2023, its steepest annual rise since 2009.

That creates a hard fiscal trade off. Rearmament may be necessary, but it competes with ageing populations, debt costs, climate adaptation and public services. The new geopolitical era is not just more dangerous. It is more expensive.

CHART 1 • Wall Street has turned panic into muscle memory

Investors have learned to treat shocks as invitations. Covid, inflation, rising bond yields and now the Iran war all knocked the S&P 500 lower, but each sell off was followed by another rush back into equities. The index has even climbed above 7,000 for the first time.

CHART 1 • TSMC is turning AI demand into monopoly economics

TSMC’s first quarter was not just strong. It was a reminder that the AI boom is being monetised first by the companies that make the physical bottlenecks. Revenue reached $35.9 billion, up 40.6% year on year, while high performance computing accounted for 61% of sales. (TSMC)

The remarkable part is the margin structure. Gross margin hit 66.2% and operating margin 58.1%, above previous guidance, while net income rose to NT$572.48 billion. CHART 1 • Africa is being left behind in the electricity race

The world has made real progress on electricity access, but the victory is uneven. The number of people without power has fallen from 1.35 billion in 2000 to 675 million in 2023, yet the burden is now concentrated in Sub Saharan Africa.

The complication is that Africa has not stood still. Access in Sub Saharan Africa has doubled from 26% to 53%, but population growth has outrun new connections. So the share improved, while the absolute number left without electricity still rose.

That makes energy poverty less a story of failure than of scale. Basic access means enough power for light, a phone or a radio, not the electricity needed for industry, cooling, healthcare or prosperity. The next race is not connection. It is usable power.

The surge in empty supertankers heading to the US is not a normal shipping quirk. It is a scramble for replacement crude. With Middle East supplies disrupted by the Iran war, buyers are turning to American oil, and FT reported that US crude exports were expected to hit 5.2 million barrels a day in April, up from 3.9 million in March.

That tells us something important about the new energy map. The US is no longer just trying to shield itself from oil shocks. It is becoming the pressure valve when the system breaks elsewhere. Kpler data showed 68 empty very large crude carriers heading to the US, compared with 24 before the war.

The danger is that export strength can collide with domestic politics. If global buyers bid aggressively for US barrels, Americans may see higher prices at home. Energy independence does not mean insulation. It means power, profit and political risk all arrive together.

CHART 1 • Why most of life on Earth is still unknown

The striking number is not the 2.17 million species we have named. It is how little that likely represents. Scientists have catalogued about 1 million insects alone, but many estimates suggest total species could run into the tens of millions, especially once microbes are included. What we know is only a fragment of what exists.

That matters because discovery is uneven. Larger animals such as mammals and birds are mostly accounted for, which is why their numbers look small and stable. The vast unknown lies in smaller lifeforms, particularly insects, fungi and microscopic organisms, where new species are still being identified every year. In effect, biology has mapped the visible world but barely touched the hidden one.

The implication is humbling. Humanity has explored space, sequenced genomes and built artificial intelligence, yet much of life on our own planet remains undescribed. The striking point in this data visualisation from the Economist is not that Norway still sits near the top. It is that France has edged back into the club of full democracies while the United States remains stuck as a flawed one. That is a reminder that democratic slippage is not always permanent, and that rich Western states are no longer moving in one direction together.

The broader picture is less comforting. The EIU says democracy stabilised in 2025 after eight years of decline, but stabilised is not the same as healed. Western Europe still dominates, yet Turkey sits far below its neighbours, Romania only just recovered from hybrid status, and much of the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa remains clustered in authoritarian territory.

So the real story is unevenness. Democracy is not collapsing everywhere, nor is it recovering cleanly. It is fragmenting into a world where institutional quality varies sharply even among allies, which makes the political map less predictable than the old democratic West once implied.

The eye catching number is not simply that China added 503 TWh of electricity demand in 2025. It is that this one country accounted for well over half of the world’s total increase. According to Ember, global demand rose by 847 TWh, which means China alone generated most of the growth.

That is not just a story about factories. China’s economy is becoming more electric in several directions at once. Ember says the country now accounts for a third of global electricity demand for the first time, while the IEA points to rising use from air conditioning, electric vehicle charging, data centres, 5G networks and the manufacturing of batteries, solar cells and new energy vehicles.

CHART 1 • The world is learning to live with permanent debt

What stands out here is not simply that global public debt is high. It is that high debt no longer looks like a temporary emergency condition. The world has moved from one shock to another, from the financial crisis to the pandemic and now into a weaker growth era with higher geopolitical strain, and each episode has left another layer of borrowing behind. Debt used to surge around wars and then fall back. Now it rises in crises and rarely retreats very far.

That changes the meaning of public borrowing. For much of the twentieth century, very high debt was associated with exceptional events such as world wars. Today it is becoming part of the normal backdrop of economic management. Governments are carrying larger welfare states, older populations, higher interest costs and more demands for industrial, military and energy spending, all at once. In that environment, debt is less a temporary bridge than a permanent feature of the system.

The danger is not just the size of the pile, but the loss of room to manoeuvre. A heavily indebted world can keep functioning for a long time, but it becomes more fragile, less flexible and more exposed to higher borrowing costs. That is what gives this chart its weight. It is not really a picture of one debt crisis. It is a picture of an economic order that has become structurally more reliant on debt to keep moving.

Permanent debt, concentrated wealth, commodity dependence and nervous capital flows are no longer treated as signs of stress in the system. They are increasingly treated as part of the furniture. That may be the most unsettling shift of all.

Because fragility rarely arrives wearing a name badge. It often looks like stability right up until something breaks. A system can function for years while quietly becoming narrower, harder to manage and less forgiving of mistakes.

CHART 1 • Why Trump’s approval is sinking faster this time

Donald Trump’s net approval has fallen to -20, its lowest point yet in his second term. That is not just another bad poll. It suggests his presidency is losing support faster, and from a weaker starting point, than it did the first time around. The Economist’s tracker shows his rating now sits below where it was at the comparable stage of his first term.

What matters is why. This does not look like a purely partisan slide. Reuters and Ipsos found growing dissatisfaction over the cost of living and rising concern over the Iran war, with fuel prices adding to the pressure. That makes the decline more dangerous politically, because voters are often less concerned with ideology than with whether life feels more expensive and less stable.

The comparison with Biden is revealing. Biden’s approval eroded more gradually and in a different economic climate. Trump’s drop looks sharper and more abrupt, which suggests events are biting faster this time. Voters may tolerate noise for a while, but they are less forgiving when disorder starts feeding into prices, conflict and confidence.

Governments are operating in an atmosphere where trust is already low, markets are already jumpy and conflict carries a price long before the first bill arrives. That makes modern politics feel more brittle than many leaders would like to admit.

There is a wider lesson in that. Power is never just about what a country can command on paper. It is also about what the public will tolerate, what industry can replace and what investors have already chosen to believe. Strength can look solid right up until the moment it is tested.

CHART 1 • Inflation in America is proving hard to bury

The real message here is not that US inflation came down after its 2022 peak. It is that the final stretch back to normal has been stubborn. The Bureau of Labor Statistics said annual consumer price inflation was 2.8% in February 2026, still above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target, while Reuters reported that New York Fed president John Williams expects headline inflation to run at about 2.75% this year and to move above 3% in the near term because of the recent energy shock.

That matters because inflation no longer looks like a clean post pandemic story. It is becoming a story of repeated disruption. First came Covid, then the supply shock, then the energy surge, and now another geopolitical jolt has arrived just as price growth was edging closer to target. Reuters reported that Federal Reserve officials are increasingly worried that higher energy costs linked to the Iran conflict could keep inflation elevated for longer.

What this suggests is that the easy phase is over. Getting inflation down from 9% was painful but achievable once supply chains normalised and rates rose sharply. Getting it from roughly 3% to 2% may be harder, because at this level even relatively small shocks matter. Inflation is lower than it was, but it is not yet tamed.
